Pūjā is the oldest and most widespread ritual of worship within the Hindu devotional tradition. The word comes from Sanskrit and means "to honour" or "to revere", and many people practise it to strengthen their spiritual and physical life by showing devotion.
In essence, in a Pūjā one receives the Divine as one would receive a much-loved guest: a seat, water, food, incense, flowers and light are offered, and through those offerings and the recitation of mantras, the devotee’s heart opens to receive His grace. It is not a mere symbolic gesture: it is a real encounter between the one who offers and That to whom the offering is made.
When our community is asked to perform a Pūjā on someone’s behalf, that offering is made with the same intention with which Pūjās are prepared in our temples and ashrams: to honour the Divine outwardly so that, in time, we may also recognise it within. It is a way of bringing more light, more grace and more love to a particular situation, person or intention.
A Pūjā can be offered for many reasons. These are some of the most common:
